Why Choose Broken Bow Family Cabins:
"We absolutely loved our stay! From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. The highlight was the peaceful stream running alongside the cabin, sitting outside listening to the water was pure relaxation."

Broken Bow and Hochatown have quietly become one of the South Central US's most coveted drive-to destinations, and the numbers back it up. The area draws more than 3 million visitors annually from a 3-hour radius that includes Dallas, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, and Shreveport. What started as a word-of-mouth secret among nature lovers has matured into a full-fledged tourism economy, fueled by the natural beauty of Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow Lake, and the Mountain Fork River.
Hochatown's incorporation in 2022 marked a turning point. The town now requires STR licensing and collects a 3% local lodging tax, signals of a market that's growing up, not slowing down. New infrastructure is arriving alongside the cabins: Choctaw Landing, a 100-room resort with a casino, outdoor amphitheater, and Tuklo Grill restaurant, has opened in Hochatown, and downtown Broken Bow is seeing a wave of new shops and dining. Hochatown ranked among the top 20 STR investment markets in 2025, according to data cited by local operators.
Seasonality matters here. Fall foliage season, roughly late October through mid-November, is peak demand, with oaks, maples, and sweetgums turning fiery reds and golds across the Ouachita Mountains. Summer (June–August) is equally popular for lake activities and water sports. Expect nightly rates 30–40% higher during these windows. Winter, by contrast, is the insider's season: fewer crowds, lower rates, and cozy cabin stays with hot tubs and fireplaces that feel genuinely restorative. Spring brings blooming landscapes and pleasant hiking temperatures. Whatever season you're planning for, understanding this rhythm helps you book smarter.
Base nightly rates for mid-size family cabins (2–3 bedrooms) typically run $250–$400 during shoulder season and $400–$600+ during peak fall foliage and summer. But the base rate is only part of the story. Cleaning fees ($150–$250 per stay), pet fees (around $150 for multi-pet properties), and OTA service fees (5–15%) can add 20–40% to your total cost before taxes.
Oklahoma state sales tax (4.5%) plus Hochatown's local lodging tax (3%) apply to all rentals. OTAs like Airbnb and VRBO collect these automatically on platform bookings; direct bookings require manual remittance by the host. A realistic 3-night family cabin stay, mid-size cabin, one pet, booked through an OTA, works out to roughly $1,300–$1,500 all-in. Booking direct through a provider like Broken Bow Family Cabins can save $100–$150 on that same stay by eliminating the OTA service fee. For peak-season travel, booking 2–3 months in advance is essential; last-minute mid-week stays in January through March can yield 20–30% savings.
Pro Tip: Calculate Your True Total Cost
Before committing, add base rate + cleaning fee + pet fee (if applicable) + 7.5% (state + local taxes) + OTA service fee (if booking through Airbnb/VRBO). This gives you the real number to compare across providers.
| Cost Component | Typical Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Base Nightly Rate (2–3BR) | $250–$600+/night | Higher during fall foliage & summer |
| Cleaning Fee | $150–$250/stay | Per stay, not per night |
| Pet Fee | ~$150/stay | Varies by property; ask before booking |
| Oklahoma State Sales Tax | 4.5% | OTAs collect automatically; direct bookings require host remittance |
| Hochatown Local Lodging Tax | 3% | Applies to properties inside incorporated Hochatown |
| OTA Service Fee (if applicable) | 5–15% of subtotal | Eliminated when you browse and book direct |
| Estimated 3-Night Total (OTA, with pet) | ~$1,300–$1,500 | Direct booking saves ~$100–$150 |
Oklahoma does not require a statewide STR license, but the regulatory picture in Hochatown is more specific. Properties within the incorporated Town of Hochatown must obtain an STR license through the Town and receive a 10-digit Avenu STR License Number used to remit the 3% local lodging tax. The Town is transitioning to an enhanced online portal through Granicus to streamline the application and remittance process, expected to be fully operational in the 2025–2026 window. For properties in the broader Broken Bow area outside Hochatown's incorporated limits, no additional local STR permits are required beyond state law.
On the tax side, all STR hosts must register with the Oklahoma Tax Commission and remit 4.5% state sales tax on gross rental revenue. OTAs handle this automatically for platform bookings; direct-booking hosts are responsible for collecting and remitting it themselves. Guests booking through Airbnb or VRBO can generally trust that taxes are handled, but for direct bookings, it's worth confirming with your host.
As a guest, you can ask any Hochatown-area host for their STR license number as a simple compliance check. For properties outside Hochatown's limits, state-level verification is minimal, which is one reason why booking with an established, reputable operator matters. Specialized short-term rental insurance is strongly recommended for hosts (though not state-mandated), covering property damage, liability, and loss of income. If something goes wrong with a booking, Oklahoma's Consumer Protection Act and the Oklahoma Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit provide avenues for recourse.

With dozens of providers and hundreds of listings in the Broken Bow market, the challenge isn't finding a cabin, it's finding the right one. These are the criteria that separate a genuinely great stay from a disappointing one.
You're Right to Be Cautious About Cabin Quality
Cleanliness and listing accuracy are the #1 sources of guest complaints in the STR market. Reading recent reviews (especially 3–4 star reviews, which tend to be most honest) and comparing listing photos across platforms helps you spot inconsistencies before booking.
Watch Out for Hidden Fees and Vague Listings
Some listings hide cleaning fees, pet fees, or amenity limitations in fine print. Always ask the host directly: "What is the total cost including all fees and taxes?" and "Are there any restrictions on pets, noise, or check-in times?" Vague or evasive answers are a red flag.
In a market full of lookalike listings and impersonal management companies, Broken Bow Family Cabins is built on a different premise entirely. With 2000+ five-star Google reviews, BBFC has earned a reputation for meticulous quality and personal attention that's genuinely hard to replicate at scale. These aren't corporate units managed from a spreadsheet, every cabin is personally vetted and cared for by owner Gavin George, and that difference shows up in the details guests notice: the cleanliness, the stocked kitchen, the hot tub that actually works.
All BBFC properties sit within ~5 miles of Broken Bow Lake, Beavers Bend State Park, and Hochatown's dining and attractions. You get the privacy and peace of a secluded cabin without sacrificing proximity to everything you came for. The portfolio spans 2 to 22 guests, from intimate retreats for couples to full-family lodges, and every cabin is professionally cleaned and sanitized after every stay. Pet-friendly options are available, and 24/7 personal guest support means a real person who knows the area is reachable when you need them.
Booking direct through BBFC saves you 5–15% compared to Airbnb or VRBO, and you're supporting a locally owned, family-operated business that puts your experience first, not a platform's commission. Whether you're planning a romantic escape, a kids-and-cousins weekend, or a full family reunion, the goal is the same: you leave refreshed, already planning your return.

Absolutely, Broken Bow and Hochatown are widely regarded as one of the South Central US's most rewarding drive-to destinations. The area offers a rare combination of natural beauty (Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow Lake, the Mountain Fork River), genuine outdoor adventure, luxury cabin experiences, and a growing dining and entertainment scene. More than 3 million visitors make the trip annually from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and the repeat-visitor rate is high, guests tend to come back because the experience delivers on what it promises. For families, couples, and groups alike, it's the kind of place that earns the "hidden gem" label and keeps it.
Broken Bow rewards visitors in every season, but each window has a distinct character. Fall (late October through mid-November) is the most popular, with oaks, maples, and sweetgums producing spectacular foliage and comfortable hiking temperatures between 64°F and 77°F. Summer (June–August) is ideal for lake activities, boating, and water sports, though temperatures can reach the low 90s. Spring brings blooming landscapes and pleasant trails, while winter, particularly January through March, offers the cozy cabin experience at its quietest and most affordable. If budget and solitude matter as much as scenery, a mid-week winter stay is one of the best-kept secrets in the market. Check a current foliage tracker (such as ExploreFall.com, updated daily from September 1) before booking a fall trip, since peak color timing shifts year to year.
Stick with reputable, established providers, the companies featured in this guide have verifiable review histories and active websites. Always read recent reviews carefully, paying particular attention to 3–4 star reviews, which tend to be the most candid about real conditions. Compare listing photos and amenity descriptions across platforms; significant discrepancies are a warning sign. Be wary of unusually low rates, requests for off-platform payment, or hosts who are slow to respond before booking. For Hochatown properties specifically, you can ask the host for their STR license number, a legitimate operator will have one and won't hesitate to share it.
The lake is just the beginning. Beavers Bend State Park offers miles of hiking and biking trails, from the easy 1.5-mile Friends Trail Loop to the challenging Skyline Trail. The Mountain Fork River is one of Oklahoma's premier fly-fishing destinations, with year-round trout fishing. Wildlife enthusiasts can visit Beavers Bend Safari Park, a 90-acre drive-thru animal park open daily. For dining and nightlife, Mountain Fork Brewery serves craft beers and pizza, Shuck Me offers fresh seafood with a Tex-Mex twist, and Hochatown Saloon delivers live country and rock music on weekends. Choctaw Landing, a new 100-room resort with a casino, outdoor amphitheater, and beer garden, has added a major new entertainment anchor to Hochatown. Our neighborhood guide covers local favorites in more detail if you're planning your itinerary.
